Stanford Alumni Beijing Club will hold its inaugural panel discussion series event on June 28th.  The event aims to bring together distinguished faculty, Stanford alumni, and other friends-of-Stanford to hear industry leaders speak about current events in China.  Our first discussion, titled, "Whither China's Economy in 2008? The Stock Market, Olympics and U.S. Recession," will discuss the topic of China's growth prospects in 2008, as the Chinese economy faces a number of uncertain variables domestically and globally this year. More specifically, the panel discussion will explore China's economic growth in 2008 and its relation to the nation's stock market slump, the Olympics and a slowing U.S. economy. Some possible questions for discussion are: will Chinese growth continue apace amid a continuing credit crunch and economic slowdown in the U.S.? What will happen to China's economic momentum after the Olympics? Will this year's slump force China's stock market to move away from being a 'casino' for speculative retail investors and become a more mature market focused on fundamentals and improving corporate governance?

Panelists include:

Carl Walter, Stanford PhD '81, is the Chief Operating Officer of JPMorgan China. Prior to leading JP Morgan's Beijing office in 2001, he was managing director of China International Capital Corporation, China's first Sino-foreign investment bank.  Walter established Credit Suisse First Boston's Beijing representative office in 1993. He is author of To Get Rich is Glorious: China's stock markets in the 80s and 90s and Privatizing China: The Stock Markets and their Role in Corporate Reform. A fluent Mandarin speaker, Walter studied economics at Beijing University in 1979-80.

Walter Lin, Stanford MA '89, serves as head of China strategic development at Morley Fund Management, the fund-management unit of Aviva Plc, the U.K.'s biggest insurance company. Prior to joining Morley, Lin was president and CEO of ABN Amro's fund-management joint venture in Beijing. He has also served as chief investment strategist at XiangCai Securities in Shanghai and also held a number of other financial research and analysis positions in both China and the USA.

Michael Pettis is Professor of Finance at Peking University's Guanghua School of Management. Pettis has spent fifteen years as a Wall Street banker and trader, including serving as managing director and head of the Latin American capital markets and liability management groups at Bear Stearns. He has previously taught at Columbia Business School and Tsinghua University. Pettis received an MBA and MIA from Columbia.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

You are invited to attend the "Start Up 101 Series" hosted by China Entrepreneurs' Club.  The workshop series are designed to meet the needs and demands of every serious entrepreneur in China.  DLA is proud to be the first organizer and sponsor of the event with Sequoia Capital.

Who Should Attend: "C-Level" Entrepreneurs (CEO, CFO, COO and etc)
Format: Educational and "hands-on" workshops designed to teach attendees the essentials and furthermore give detailed explanations over such topics. Networking follows the workshop.

Date: September 17, 2007, 6pm to 9pm (workshop); 9pm to 10pm (networking)
Location: Kerry Centre Hotel in Beijing, Kowloon Room
Price: 200rmb pre-sale, 300rmb at the door and 150rmb for CE Members
Language: English

*RSVP highly recommended - capacity 200

Workshop One:
Raising Capital: Term Sheets- Term sheets are used by venture capital, as well as institutional investors to discuss and negotiate the terms of investment into a company. As an entrepreneur there are landmines that you need to be careful of and watch out before signing one. This session will highlight how to read a term sheet, how to figure out what is reasonable and if it is a good deal or not.

You will participate in a "live" negotiation session where you will have the opportunity to either choose to be a venture capitalist or an entrepreneur. This exercise will allow you to see first hand why certain provisions are in a term sheet and the rationale for such provision. While negotiating the provision, a venture capitalist and a lawyer will explain to you what the provision really means and why it is necessary for the venture capitalist to have it.

Workshop Two:
Legal Restructuring for IPO- The road to an IPO is difficult and only determined companies get that far. Every company wants to list on the NASDAQ but before a company can successfully list on the NASDAQ, NYSE, HKSE or London AIM, it must have the proper legal structure in place. Hear it from the experts. It is never too early to learn what legal structure is a "must" for a Chinese company to list offshore.

Speaker - Rocky T. Lee, Partner and head of the VC & PE practice of DLA Piper in Beijing. Mr. Lee has been the leading venture lawyer in China for 3 years running and he has helped DLA capture Venture Law Firm of the Year from Zero2ipo and Counsel of the Year from Capital Magazine.

Speaker - Shauna Xie-Associate of Sequoia Capital China. Prior to joining Sequoia Capital in January 2006, Shauna was a management consultant with Monitor Group. Shauna has a BS in Computer Engineering from University of Toronto and an MBA from Stanford University.

Speaker - Chris Terry, Senior associate at DLA Piper in Beijing and Rocky Lee will work with you to help you understand listing requirements of some of the most popular offshore exchanges. Mr. Terry will also explain very complicated Chinese rules and regulations concerning the setup of a listable business structure involving a Chinese business.

Dear Mr.Wang,
This is Freda Wang from South China Morning Post Beijing Bureau.
Sorry about the bother, but we want to ask a favor from you. We are
now working on an article caring Philippine maids employed in
mainland China and is looking for some employer interviewees. I
don't know if we could be lucky enough to find some volunteers in
your club?

The aim of the interview is to learn some basic facts about the
daily life of the employers and their Philippine maids, which might
be a common thing to them but is still a new phenomenon in mainland
China. Our interviewees may choose any patterns they prefer,
including  in person, telephone, online, etc. Personal information
will be strictly kept a secret.

Thanks for your patience and apologize again for the bother.

Hope to hear from you.

Most sincerely,
Freda Wang

I am attaching another copy of the questionnaire - if you happen to know of any other returned students who might be willing to provide information, please forward it to them. This is all completely voluntary. We are mainly trying to find out what sorts of people are returning to China after having studied in the United States. Proposal from UCLA Alumni Travel Program

Dear Mr. Wu:

I am the Assistant Director of the UCLA Alumni Travel program and will be traveling with a group on a tour of China from September 27-October 13, 2002.  We will be in Shanghai on October 10-12 and I was hoping there might be an opportunity to connect with other UCLA alumni while we are there.  Samantha Fiske passed your name and email to me and advised me to contact you directly.

I am hoping to arrange an informal gathering (a no-host dinner, cocktails, etc.) where alumni from the tour have the opportunity to mix and mingle with UCLA alumni living in Shanghai.  It is always a highlight when our passengers have a chance to get a "local" experience apart from the tour.  The best times would be dinner on October 10 (Thursday) or any time on October 12 (Saturday).

Please let me know if you think the UCLA Shanghai Club might be interested in getting together.  If so I will work out the finer details with you.  I appreciate your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Cori Tahara

Message from Mark Stevens:

UCLA alums:

I’m now driving sales for internet communications software called Interwise ECP (Enterprise Communications Platform). Interwise is used for phone conferencing, video conferencing, training, sales demos, sales briefings and a whole host of other applications. One of the big advantages of Interwise is that audio, video, file sharing work well even over a 56k dial-up connection, which is pretty important here in Asia .

Interwise ECP contains 5 different meeting formats:

  • 1-on-1 mentoring that includes full live video and remote PC access
  • Classic conference calls with easy document sharing capability
  • Virtual Classroom Training
  • Seminars
  • Webcasts

Rather than go into a long explanation, a 30 minute live on-line meeting will show you just how useful Interwise is for not only replacing conference calls, but also for remote training, connecting your sales and dealer network, pulling in suppliers and customers, etc. It would probably most convenient to set up a test with your IT manager, and then have you join in for a few minutes when Interwise is up and running. A test requires only an internet connection, speakers and microphone. In addition, you will need to download and install the Interwise software. The process is quite easy, and then you will see just how simple and useful Interwise is.

Regards,

Mark Stevens
